Ibrahim ibn Ya‘qub narrated to us; ‘Amr ibn ‘Asim narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thabit, from ‘Amr ibn Abi Salamah, from his mother Umm Salamah, from Abu Salamah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When one of you is struck by a calamity, let him say: “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my affliction, so reward me for it and replace it for me with something better.”’ When Abu Salamah was near death, he said: ‘O Allah, provide my family with someone better than me.’ When he died, Umm Salamah said: ‘Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return. With Allah I seek reward for my affliction, so reward me for it.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith through this route. This hadith has also been narrated from other routes from Umm Salamah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Salamah’s name was ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Asad.’
