Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Salih, the client of al-Taw’amah, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet, who said: ‘No people sit together in a gathering in which they neither remember Allah nor send blessings upon their Prophet without it becoming a cause of loss for them. If He wills, He will punish them; and if He wills, He will forgive them.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. It has also been narrated by other routes from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet. The meaning of his words, “a cause of loss” (tirah), is regret and remorse. Some experts in Arabic said that tirah means retribution.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler records two explanations of tirah: regret and remorse, or retribution. The report’s conditional ending says Allah may punish or forgive the people in that gathering.
