Muhammad ibn Hatim al-Mu’addib narrated to us; ‘Ammar ibn Muhammad, the nephew of Sufyan al-Thawri, narrated to us; al-Layth ibn Abi Sulaym narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Sabit, from Abu Umamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made many supplications, none of which we retained. We said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you made many supplications, but we retained none of them.’ He said, ‘Shall I direct you to words that encompass all of that? Say: “O Allah, we ask You for the good for which Your Prophet Muhammad asked You, and we seek refuge in You from the evil from which Your Prophet Muhammad sought refuge in You. You are the One from whom help is sought, and with You rests the conveyance of the message. There is no might or power except through Allah.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith.’
