Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us, saying: Shu‘bah informed us, from Abu Ishaq, from a man, from Farwah ibn Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him), that he came to the Prophet and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, teach me something to say when I go to bed.’ He said, ‘Recite: “Say: O disbelievers” (109:1), for it is a disavowal of associating partners with Allah.’ Shu‘bah said: Sometimes he would say, ‘once,’ and sometimes he would not say it.
Musa ibn Hizam narrated to us: Yahya ibn Adam informed us, from Isra’il, from Abu Ishaq, from Farwah ibn Nawfal, from his father, who came to the Prophet and mentioned something similar in meaning. This is more accurate.
Abu ‘Isa said: Zuhayr narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq, from Farwah ibn Nawfal, from his father, from the Prophet, with something similar. This route is more fitting and more accurate than Shu‘bah’s version. The companions of Abu Ishaq differed over this hadith. It has also been transmitted by another route: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal narrated it from his father, from the Prophet. ‘Abd al-Rahman was Farwah ibn Nawfal’s brother.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The first chain includes an unnamed transmitter between Abu Ishaq and Farwah. The alternate routes instead identify Farwah’s father as the Companion narrator, and the compiler prefers Zuhayr’s version over Shu‘bah’s. The brief note that Shu‘bah sometimes says ‘once’ and sometimes omits it is retained as stated, without assigning the word ‘once’ to a specific phrase.

The brief comment does not explicitly identify what “once” modifies.
What element of the wording is sometimes said and sometimes omitted?
