Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Imran al-Tha‘labi al-Kufi narrated to us; Zayd ibn Hubab narrated to us, from Malik ibn Mighwal, from ‘Abdullah ibn Buraydah al-Aslami, from his father, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man supplicating: ‘O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah, there is no god but You, the One, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor is begotten, and none is equal to Him.’ He said: The Prophet replied: ‘By the One in whose hand is my soul, he has asked Allah by His Greatest Name, by which, when He is called upon, He answers, and when He is asked, He gives.’ Zayd said: ‘Years later, I mentioned it to Zuhayr ibn Mu‘awiyah, and he said: “Abu Ishaq narrated to me from Malik ibn Mighwal.”’ Zayd said: ‘Then I mentioned it to Sufyan al-Thawri, and he narrated it to me from Malik.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith. Sharik narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq, from Ibn Buraydah, from his father. Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani had in fact taken it from Malik ibn Mighwal and concealed that link by tadlis. Sharik narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq.’’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The term tadlis refers here to concealing an intermediary in a chain; the wording is retained as the compiler's transmission criticism.

The compiler describes a discrepancy between routes and says Abu Ishaq concealed the intermediate link; this is preserved as his report rather than independently verified here.

Does the final chain comment refer to Abu Ishaq's omission of Malik ibn Mighwal in Sharik's route?
