Abu Kurayb narrated to us; Abu Usamah narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Fatimah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), asking him for a servant. He said to her: ‘Say: “O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of all things, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. You are the First, and nothing precedes You; You are the Last, and nothing follows You; You are the Manifest, and nothing is above You; You are the Hidden, and nothing is beneath You. Settle my debt and free me from poverty.”’ He said: ‘This is a hasan gharib hadith. Several of al-A‘mash’s companions narrated it similarly. Some narrated it from al-A‘mash, from Abu Salih, as a mursal report, without mentioning Abu Hurayrah.’’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The compiler notes that some transmissions omit Abu Hurayrah and are mursal, unlike the chain in the main report.

Should the alternate mursal route remain distinguished from the report with Abu Hurayrah in its chain?
