Qutaybah narrated to us; Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from ‘Ali ibn Rabi‘ah, who said: I witnessed ‘Ali being brought a riding animal. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said three times, ‘In the name of Allah.’ When he was seated on its back, he said, ‘Praise belongs to Allah,’ then recited: ‘Glory be to the One who subjected this to us, for we could not have done so ourselves; and to our Lord we shall surely return.’ He then said ‘Praise belongs to Allah’ three times and ‘Allah is the Greatest’ three times, and said: ‘Glory be to You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.’ Then he laughed. I asked, ‘Commander of the Faithful, what made you laugh?’ He said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do as I did, then laugh. I asked, “Messenger of Allah, what made you laugh?” He said: “Your Lord marvels at His servant when he says, ‘My Lord, forgive my sins; no one forgives sins except You.’”’ There is also a report on this subject from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). He said: ‘This is a hasan sahih hadith.’
