Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib, that the Prophet said to him: ‘Shall I teach you some words to say when you go to bed? If you die that night, you will die upon the fitrah; and if you wake in the morning, you will have woken to good. Say: “O Allah, I submit myself to You, turn my face toward You, entrust my affair to You, and seek You with hope and fear. I lean upon You. There is no refuge or escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You sent down and Your Prophet whom You sent.”’ Al-Bara’ said: I replied, ‘And Your Messenger whom You sent.’ He struck my chest with his hand and said, ‘Your Prophet whom You sent.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih gharib; it has been transmitted by other routes from al-Bara’. Mansur ibn al-Mu‘tamir narrated something similar from Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubaydah, from al-Bara’, from the Prophet, except that he said, ‘When you go to bed while in a state of ablution.’ A similar report is also transmitted from Rafi‘ ibn Khadij.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Al-Bara’ substitutes ‘Messenger’ for ‘Prophet’ in the formula, and the Prophet corrects him back to ‘Prophet.’ Another route adds that the person should be in a state of ablution when going to bed. The Arabic metaphor about leaning one’s back on Allah is rendered as relying upon Him.
