Sufyan ibn Waki‘ narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ubaydullah, from Ibrahim ibn Suwayd, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid, from ‘Abdullah, who said: ‘When evening came, the Prophet would say: “We have entered the evening, and the dominion has entered the evening belonging to Allah. Praise belongs to Allah. There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.”’ [The narrator said:] “I think he said this as part of it. ‘I ask You for the good of this night and the good that follows it. I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil that follows it. I seek refuge in You from laziness and the evils of old age, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Fire and the punishment of the grave.” When morning came, he would say the same, adding, “We have entered the morning, and the dominion has entered the morning belonging to Allah. Praise belongs to Allah.” Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Shu‘bah narrated it with this chain from Ibn Mas‘ud, but did not attribute it to the Prophet.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The narrator expresses uncertainty about the clause ‘To Him belongs the dominion and praise, and He has power over all things.’ The Arabic gives the full supplication for evening and only the shorter opening praise for morning. The compiler notes that Shu‘bah’s version from Ibn Mas‘ud is mawquf, not attributed to the Prophet.
أُرَاهُ قَالَ فِيهَا لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
The narrator explicitly marks this clause as something he thinks was included in the formula.
Is this clause part of the wording of the supplication in this route?
