Al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu ‘Ubayd, the client of Ibn Azhar, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, who said: ‘One of you will continue to be answered so long as he does not grow impatient and say, “I supplicated, but I was not answered.”’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Abu ‘Ubayd’s name was Sa‘d. He was the client of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Azhar; it is also said that he was the client of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Azhar was a cousin of ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf. A similar report is also transmitted from Anas.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Prophet’s statement describes impatience as saying that one’s supplication went unanswered. The compiler gives two reported affiliations for Abu ‘Ubayd and notes the kinship between the two ‘Abd al-Rahmans.
