Al-Qasim ibn Dinar al-Kufi narrated this to us; Ishaq ibn Mansur al-Kufi narrated to us, from Isra’il, with this chain. Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us; Abu al-Nadr narrated to us; Bakr ibn Khunays narrated to us, from Muhammad al-Qurashi, from Rabi‘ah ibn Yazid, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Bilal, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Adhere to night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you. Night prayer draws one near to Allah, restrains from sin, expiates sins, and drives illness from the body.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is a gharib hadith. We know the report from Bilal only through this route, and its chain is not sound. I heard Muhammad ibn Isma‘il say that Muhammad al-Qurashi is Muhammad ibn Sa‘id al-Shami, also known as Ibn Abi Qays and Muhammad ibn Hassan; his reports have been abandoned. Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated this hadith from Rabi‘ah ibn Yazid, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Abu Umamah, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), with the wording: “Adhere to night prayer, for it was the practice of the righteous before you; it brings one near to your Lord, expiates sins, and restrains from sin.” Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This is more authentic than the report of Abu Idris from Bilal.’

Al-Tirmidhi says the Bilal chain is unsound, identifies the narrator whose reports were abandoned, and names the more authentic route through Abu Umamah. The English witness omits this critical evaluation.

Should the chain criticism and preferred route be retained with the witness?
