‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman informed us; Muhammad ibn ‘Imran ibn Abi Layla informed us; my father narrated to me; Ibn Abi Layla narrated to me, from Dawud ibn ‘Ali—he is the son of ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas—from his father, from his grandfather Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: I heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ say one night, after he had finished his prayer: ‘O Allah, I ask You for mercy from Your presence, by which You guide my heart, gather my affairs, mend my disarray, set right what is absent from me, raise what is present with me, purify my deeds, inspire me with right guidance, restore my fellowship, and protect me from every evil. O Allah, grant me faith and certainty after which there is no disbelief, and mercy through which I may attain the honor of Your generosity in this world and the Hereafter.
‘O Allah, I ask You for success in what You bestow upon me—and it is also transmitted: in what You decree—and for the welcome given to martyrs, the life of the happy, and victory over the enemies. O Allah, I entrust my need to You. Though my judgment may fall short and my deeds be weak, I am in need of Your mercy. So I ask You, O Disposer of affairs and Healer of hearts, just as You grant refuge between the seas, to grant me refuge from the punishment of the Blaze, from the call to destruction, and from the trial of the graves. O Allah, whatever good You have promised any of Your creation, or any good You will grant any of Your servants, that my judgment has fallen short of, my intention has not reached, or my request has not encompassed, I long for it from You and ask You for it by Your mercy, Lord of the worlds.
‘O Allah, Possessor of the mighty bond and the right-guiding command, I ask You for safety on the Day of the Threat and for Paradise on the Day of Eternity, alongside those brought near, the witnesses, those who bow and prostrate, and those who fulfill their covenants. You are Merciful and Loving, and You do as You will. O Allah, make us guides who are rightly guided, neither astray nor leading others astray; allies to Your allies and enemies to Your enemies. Through love of You, we love those who love You; and because of enmity toward You, we oppose those who oppose You. O Allah, this is the supplication, and from You comes the response; this is the effort, and upon You is our reliance.
‘O Allah, place light for me in my grave, light in my heart, light before me, light behind me, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light below me, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light in my hair, light in my skin, light in my flesh, light in my blood, and light in my bones. O Allah, increase my light, grant me light, and make light for me. Glory be to the One who is cloaked in might and proclaims it; glory be to the One who wears majesty and is ennobled by it; glory be to the One to whom alone glorification is due. Glory be to the Possessor of bounty and blessings; glory be to the Possessor of majesty and generosity; glory be to the Possessor of grandeur and honor.’
Abu ‘Isa said: This is a gharib hadith; we know it only through the narration of Ibn Abi Layla by this route. Shu‘bah and Sufyan al-Thawri narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Kurayb, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, part of this hadith, but did not relate it at such length.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The supplication is translated in full through its closing glorifications. The source itself marks a wording variant in ‘success in bestowal’ (al-‘ata’), also transmitted as ‘in decree’ (al-qada’); both are preserved. The closing compiler’s note says other transmitters narrated some of the hadith but not at this length. This describes their versions, not an omission or truncation in the present Arabic text.
Several devotional expressions are compact or unusual in the Arabic. ‘The welcome given to martyrs’ renders nuzul al-shuhada; ‘grant refuge between the seas’ follows the transmitted comparison as worded, without supplying an unstated explanation. The final poetic phrases preserve the images of might, majesty, bounty, generosity, grandeur, and honor.

The supplication says ‘success in bestowal’ (al-‘ata’), followed by ‘and it is narrated: in decree’ (wa-yurwa fi al-qada’), indicating a wording variant.
Please confirm the variant is presented as an alternative reading rather than two separate requests.
