Hannād narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn narrated to us: Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us: ʿAbdullāh ibn Buḥayr narrated to me that he heard Hāniʾ, the client of ʿUthmān, say: When ʿUthmān stood beside a grave, he would weep until his beard became wet. Someone said to him, 'You remember Paradise and the Fire and do not weep, yet you weep over this?' He replied: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The grave is the first station of the Hereafter. If one is saved from it, what comes after is easier; if one is not saved from it, what comes after is more severe.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: 'I have never seen a sight except that the grave is more dreadful than it.' He said: 'This hadith is ḥasan gharīb; we know it only through Hishām ibn Yūsuf.'
