Hannad narrated to us: Waki' narrated to us, from Mis'ar and Sufyan, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Abu Al-'Abbas, from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The best fast is the fast of my brother Dawud: he fasted one day and did not fast the next, and he did not flee when he met the enemy.’ Abu 'Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Abu Al-'Abbas was the blind Makkan poet, named As-Sa'ib bin Farrukh. Some scholars said that the best fasting is to fast one day and refrain the next; this is also described as the most demanding form of fasting.
