Abd ibn Humayd narrated to us: Abd al-Razzaq informed us: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah encouraged people to pray at night during Ramadan without imposing it as a binding obligation. He would say, ‘Whoever prays during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward will have his previous sins forgiven.’ The Messenger of Allah died while the practice remained as it was. It remained so during Abu Bakr's caliphate and the early part of Umar ibn al-Khattab's caliphate.
There is also a report on this topic from A'ishah. Abu Isa said: This is a sahih hadith. The hadith has also been narrated from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from A'ishah, from the Prophet; Abu Isa said that report is hasan sahih.
