Qutaybah narrated to us, from Malik ibn Anas, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Close the door, secure the waterskin, turn a vessel upside down or cover it, and extinguish the lamp. Satan does not open a closed door, undo a fastening, or uncover a vessel; but a little vermin can set people’s houses ablaze.’ Reports on this topic also come from Ibn ‘Umar, Abu Hurayrah, and Ibn ‘Abbas. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic), and it has been reported from Jabir by more than one route.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic gives two alternatives for the vessel: turn it over or cover it. The closing image refers to a small harmful creature that may knock a lamp into flammable material and start a fire; the text does not explicitly name the animal.

The English witness omits Qutaybah, Malik ibn Anas, and Abu al-Zubayr from the chain.

Should the complete chain be included?
