حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ، وَعُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ جَبَلَةَ بْنِ سُحَيْمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنْ يَقْرِنَ بَيْنَ التَّمْرَتَيْنِ حَتَّى يَسْتَأْذِنَ صَاحِبَهُ . قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ مَوْلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .

Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri and ‘Ubayd Allah narrated to us, from al-Thawri, from Jabalih ibn Suhaym, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade pairing two dates together until one asks permission from one’s companion. There is also a report on this topic from Sa‘d, the freedman of Abu Bakr. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic).
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic refers to eating two dates together (qarana bayna al-tamratayn); ‘pairing’ preserves the sense without assuming a particular eating context beyond the report.
