Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn ‘Askar al-Baghdadi and ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman both narrated to us: Yahya ibn Hassan narrated to us: Sulayman ibn Bilal narrated to us, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘A’ishah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: ‘A house without dates leaves its inhabitants hungry.’ There is also a report on this topic from Salma, the wife of Abu Rafi‘. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharīb (good, though rare) by this route; we know it from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah only through this route. He said: I asked al-Bukhari about this hadith, and he said: ‘I do not know anyone who reported it besides Yahya ibn Hassan.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic states the consequence directly: a house with no dates has hungry inhabitants. The line is preserved without recasting it as a broader dietary claim.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَهْلِ بْنِ عَسْكَرٍ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ،
The English witness omits the full chain through the two co-transmitters, Yahya ibn Hassan, Sulayman ibn Bilal, Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, and his father.
Should the witness include the complete chain?
