حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ الْعَبْدِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى، أَنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنِ الْجَرَادِ، فَقَالَ غَزَوْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ نَأْكُلُ الْجَرَادَ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَكَذَا رَوَى سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَقَالَ سِتَّ غَزَوَاتٍ وَرَوَى سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ أَبِي يَعْفُورٍ فَقَالَ سَبْعَ غَزَوَاتٍ . قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَجَابِرٍ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . وَأَبُو يَعْفُورٍ اسْمُهُ وَاقِدٌ وَيُقَالُ وَقْدَانُ أَيْضًا وَأَبُو يَعْفُورٍ الآخَرُ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ نِسْطَاسَ .

Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Ya‘fur al-‘Abdi, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Awfa, who was asked about locusts. He said: I campaigned with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on six campaigns, and we ate locusts. Abu ‘Isa said: This is how Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah reported this hadith from Abu Ya‘fur, saying six campaigns. Sufyan al-Thawri and more than one other narrator reported it from Abu Ya‘fur, saying seven campaigns. Reports on this topic also come from Ibn ‘Umar and Jabir. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). Abu Ya‘fur’s name was Waqid; it is also said Waqdan. Another Abu Ya‘fur was ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Ubayd ibn Nistas.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source preserves two variants in the number of campaigns: six in Ibn ‘Uyaynah's report and seven in al-Thawri's and other reports.

The English witness omits Ahmad ibn Mani‘ and Sufyan from the chain.
Should the full chain be included?
وَأَبُو يَعْفُورٍ اسْمُهُ وَاقِدٌ وَيُقَالُ وَقْدَانُ أَيْضًا وَأَبُو يَعْفُورٍ الآخَرُ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ نِسْطَاسَ .
The Arabic says the other narrator was ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Ubayd ibn Nistas; the witness has a typo in the name and omits ibn ‘Ubayd.
Should the second Abu Ya‘fur's name be corrected?
