Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn ‘Umar ibn ‘Ali al-Muqaddami narrated to us: Muslim ibn Ibrahim narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fada’ narrated to us: My father narrated to me, from ‘Alqamah ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Muzani, from his father, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘When one of you buys meat, let him make plenty of broth. If he cannot get meat, he will at least get broth, and broth is one of the two meats.’ There is also a report on this topic from Abu Dharr. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharīb (rare); we know it only through this route, through the report of Muhammad ibn Fada’. Muhammad ibn Fada’ is al-Mu‘abbir, and Sulayman ibn Harb criticized him. ‘Alqamah ibn ‘Abd Allah is the brother of Bakr ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Muzani.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The saying calls broth ‘one of the two meats’; the translation preserves the wording rather than explaining or revising the comparison.

  • حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ،

The English witness omits the chain through Muhammad ibn ‘Umar ibn ‘Ali, Muslim ibn Ibrahim, and Muhammad ibn Fada’. It also abbreviates ‘Alqamah's full name.

Should the full chain and narrator name be included?
