Wasl ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Abu Hayyan al-Taymi, from Abu Zur‘ah ibn ‘Amr ibn Jarir, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Meat was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the foreleg was presented to him. He liked it, so he tore a bite from it. Reports on this topic also come from Ibn Mas‘ud, ‘A’ishah, ‘Abd Allah ibn Ja‘far, and Abu ‘Ubaydah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). Abu Hayyan’s name was Yahya ibn Sa‘id ibn Hayyan, and Abu Zur‘ah ibn ‘Amr ibn Jarir’s name was Harim.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic describes the foreleg being presented to the Prophet, who liked it and tore off a bite; the animal is not specified.

  • حَدَّثَنَا وَاصِلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى،

The English witness omits the chain through Wasl ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la, Muhammad ibn Fudayl, Abu Hayyan, and Abu Zur‘ah.

Should the complete chain be included?
