Hadith Text & Chain

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "What an excellent condiment vinegar is."

Another chain with similar except that he (ﷺ) said: "What an excellent condiment, or, (the most excellent of) condiments is vinegar."

[Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib from this route. It is not known as a Hadith of Hisham bin 'Urwah except through the narration of Sulaiman bin Bilal.

Linguistic Analysis

The word "udm" (condiment) refers to that which is eaten with bread to enhance its flavor. The Prophet's description of vinegar as "ni'm al-udm" (excellent condiment) indicates its praiseworthy nature and benefit.

The variation in wording between the two chains reflects the natural transmission process, with both conveying the same essential meaning regarding vinegar's excellence.

Juridical & Spiritual Significance

This hadith encourages the use of vinegar and indicates its permissibility and virtue. Scholars derive from this the recommendation to use vinegar as a condiment.

The Prophet's praise for this simple substance teaches contentment with what is readily available and demonstrates that blessings may be found in humble provisions.

This hadith also illustrates the Prophet's manner of praising beneficial creations of Allah, directing attention to their benefits.

Authenticity Assessment

Imam Tirmidhi classified this hadith as "Hasan Sahih Gharib" - meaning it has a sound chain with minor irregularity in transmission.

The note regarding its transmission solely through Sulaiman bin Bilal from Hisham bin 'Urwah indicates its unique transmission route while maintaining reliability.

Practical Applications

Muslims are encouraged to use vinegar in their meals, following the Prophet's commendation.

This hadith serves as a reminder to appreciate Allah's blessings in simple foods and to avoid extravagance.
