‘Abdah ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Khuza‘i narrated to us: Mu‘awiyah ibn Hisham narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘A’ishah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat watermelon with fresh dates. There is also a report on this topic from Anas. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharīb (good, though rare). Some narrators reported it from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from the Prophet in mursal form, without mentioning ‘A’ishah. Yazid ibn Ruman reported this hadith from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source contrasts a mursal version omitting ‘A’ishah with Yazid ibn Ruman's route from ‘Urwah through ‘A’ishah.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْخُزَاعِيُّ،
The English witness omits the chain through ‘Abdah, Mu‘awiyah ibn Hisham, Sufyan, and Hisham ibn ‘Urwah.
Should the full chain be included?
