Yahya ibn Musa narrated to us: ‘Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us: Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ narrated to us. (Another route:) Qutaybah narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Karim al-Jurjani narrated to us, from Qays ibn al-Rabi‘—the meaning is the same—, from Abu Hashim, namely al-Rummani, from Zadhan, from Salman, who said: I read in the Torah that the blessing of food is wudu’ (washing) after it. I mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what I had read in the Torah. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The blessing of food is wudu’ before it and wudu’ after it.’ Reports on this topic also come from Anas and Abu Hurayrah. Abu ‘Isa said: We know this hadith only through the report of Qays ibn al-Rabi‘. Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ is considered weak in hadith. Abu Hashim al-Rummani’s name was Yahya ibn Dinar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source uses wudu’ before and after eating; it may refer to washing before and after the meal, while the wording is retained without narrowing it to a specific ritual procedure. The Arabic gives two routes which converge at Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ and continue with the same meaning.

The English witness omits both transmission routes through Yahya ibn Musa/‘Abd Allah ibn Numayr and Qutaybah/‘Abd al-Karim al-Jurjani.

Should both chains be included in the witness?

The Arabic says al-wudu’ after food; in context this may mean washing before and after eating, while the witness leaves it as ritual wudu’.

Should the witness clarify whether this means handwashing or ritual ablution?
