Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the privy and food was brought near to him. They said: ‘Shall we bring you water for wudu’?’ He replied: ‘I have only been commanded to perform wudu’ when I rise for prayer.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). ‘Amr ibn Dinar also reported it from Sa‘id ibn al-Huwayrith, from Ibn ‘Abbas. ‘Ali ibn al-Madini said that Yahya ibn Sa‘id said: Sufyan al-Thawri disliked washing hands before eating, and disliked placing a loaf beneath the serving bowl.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Here wudu’ clearly refers to ritual ablution, since the Prophet says it is commanded when rising for prayer.
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ،
The English witness omits the chain through Ahmad ibn Mani‘, Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim, Ayyub, and Ibn Abi Mulaykah.
Should the full chain be included?
