Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: al-‘Ala’ ibn al-Fadl ibn ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Abi Sawiyyah, Abu al-Hudhayl, narrated to us; ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Ikrash narrated to us, from his father, ‘Ikrash ibn Dhu’ayb, who said: The Banu Murrah ibn ‘Ubayd sent me with the alms due on their wealth to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I came to him in Madinah and found him sitting among the Muhajirun and the Ansar. Then he took my hand and went with me to the house of Umm Salamah. He said, “Is there any food?” A large bowl full of tharid and pieces of meat and fat was brought to us, and we began eating from it. I reached with my hand from around its sides, while the Messenger of Allah ate from what was directly before him. He placed his left hand over my right hand, then said, “O ‘Ikrash, eat from one place, for it is one food.”

Then a platter containing an assortment of fresh dates—or dried dates; ‘Ubayd Allah was unsure—was brought to us. I began eating from what was in front of me, while the Messenger of Allah’s hand moved around the platter. He said, “O ‘Ikrash, eat wherever you wish, for these are not all one variety.” Then water was brought. The Messenger of Allah washed his hands and, with the moisture on his palms, wiped his face, forearms, and head. He said, “O ‘Ikrash, this is the washing (wudu’) for what the fire has altered.” The report contains a story.

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharīb; we know it only through the narration of al-‘Ala’ ibn al-Fadl. Al-‘Ala’ alone transmitted this hadith. We know of no hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through ‘Ikrash other than this one.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness omits the full chain of transmission, translated here from the Arabic. Its phrase “I arrived with him in Al-Madinah” appears to misrender the Arabic, which says that ‘Ikrash came to the Prophet in Madinah. “Al-wadhar” is rendered descriptively as pieces of meat and fat; the precise food term is retained cautiously.

  • The text uses wudu’ (literally washing/ablution) for washing after food whose cooking fire altered it. The Arabic compiler’s phrase “the report contains a story” is preserved separately from Abu ‘Isa’s evaluation.

No uncertainty: the chain is present in Arabic and absent from the English witness.

Please review the translation of the complete isnad omitted by the English witness.

The Arabic wording is clear; the English witness appears to misrender it.

Should the witness's ‘I arrived with him in Al-Madinah’ be corrected to ‘I came to him in Madinah’?

The exact referent of the unusual food term al-wadhar is uncertain.

Is ‘pieces of meat and fat’ the best cautious rendering here?
