Muhammad ibn Maymun al-Makki narrated to us: Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us; Malik ibn Anas narrated to me, from Ishaq ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Talhah, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) picking through the dish—meaning the gourd—and I have loved it ever since.
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. This hadith has been transmitted through more than one route from Anas. It is also reported that he saw gourd placed before the Messenger of Allah and asked him, “What is this?” He replied, “This is gourd; we use it to make our food more plentiful.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic includes a second report about gourd placed before the Prophet, absent from the English witness. The verb يتتبع means he was seeking/picking through the dish for the gourd. The noun الدباء refers to gourd or squash.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ الْمَكِّيُّ،
The English witness omits the full chain of transmission.
