Yahya ibn Musa narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ya‘la al-Kufi narrated to us: ‘Anbasah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Qurashi narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Allaq, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Eat supper, even if it is only a handful of poor-quality dried dates, for leaving supper brings on old age.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is munkar; we know it only by this route. ‘Anbasah is considered weak in hadith, and ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Allaq is unknown.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The food حشف is poor-quality dried dates; “a handful” preserves the wording without implying a full meal. The final clause literally describes neglecting supper as causing aging or senescence; “brings on old age” preserves that image.

  • حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى،

The English witness omits the source isnad.

  • ‏ وَعَنْبَسَةُ يُضَعَّفُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ وَعَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَلاَّقٍ مَجْهُولٌ ‏.

The English witness has an awkward phrase about Anbasah being weak; the Arabic clearly says he is regarded as weak in hadith and that Abd al-Malik ibn Allaq is unknown.
