Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

‘Abd Allah ibn al-Sabbah al-Hashimi narrated to us: ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from his father, from ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah, that he entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while food was with him. He said, “Come closer, my son. Mention Allah’s name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.”

Abu ‘Isa said: It has also been transmitted from Hisham ibn ‘Urwah, from Abu Wajzah al-Sa‘di, from a man of Muzaynah, from ‘Umar ibn Abi Salamah. Hisham ibn ‘Urwah’s companions differed in their transmission of this hadith. Abu Wajzah al-Sa‘di was named Yazid ibn ‘Ubayd.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic has ‘come closer, my son’ (ادْنُ يَا بُنَىَّ); the witness says ‘sit down, O my son.’ Both convey an invitation to approach, but ‘come closer’ follows the wording more closely.

  • حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْهَاشِمِيُّ،

The English witness omits the first three narrators in the source chain.

Please review the full isnad supplied from Arabic.

  • أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَعِنْدَهُ طَعَامٌ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ ادْنُ يَا بُنَىَّ وَسَمِّ اللَّهَ وَكُلْ بِيَمِينِكَ وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ ‏" ‏ ‏.

The witness says ‘sit down’; the Arabic verb means come closer or approach.

Should ‘come closer’ be preferred for ادنُ in this context?
