Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Qutaybah and Nasr ibn ‘Ali both narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Jabir, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fed us horse meat and forbade us from eating donkey meat. There is also a report on this topic from Asma’ bint Abi Bakr. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). More than one narrator reported it from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Jabir, in this way. Hammad ibn Zayd reported it from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, from Jabir; the report of Ibn ‘Uyaynah is more sound. He said: I heard Muhammad say, ‘Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah has a better memory than Hammad ibn Zayd.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic verb means that the Messenger fed them horse meat; the English witness says he ‘allowed’ them, which makes the statement sound like a legal ruling rather than a report of being fed.

  • قَالَ أَطْعَمَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لُحُومَ الْخَيْلِ وَنَهَانَا عَنْ لُحُومِ الْحُمُرِ ‏.

The Arabic says ‘fed us horse meat’ (at‘amana), not ‘allowed us to eat it’.

Should the witness be corrected to preserve the report's wording rather than turn it into an explicit legal permission?

  • حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ،

The English witness omits both Qutaybah and Nasr ibn ‘Ali from the opening chain.

Should the complete chain be included?
