Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Abd Allah and al-Hasan—the two sons of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah—and he related something similar. ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad’s teknonym was Abu Hashim. Al-Zuhri said: ‘Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad was the more acceptable of the two.’ Others besides Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman reported from Ibn ‘Uyaynah that he said: ‘‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad was the more acceptable of the two.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic).
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This is a continuation giving an additional route and a differing assessment of which brother was more acceptable: al-Zuhri favors al-Hasan, while other transmitters from Ibn ‘Uyaynah favor ‘Abd Allah.
حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ،
The English witness omits the full additional chain and the identification that both men are sons of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah; it also contains a duplicated name in the final quotation.
Should the witness restore the chain, family identification, and unduplicated name?
