Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi and Abu ‘Ammar both narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Ubayd Allah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from Maymunah, that a mouse fell into ghee and died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about it and said: ‘Throw it away, and what is around it, and eat the rest.’ There is also a report on this topic from Abu Hurayrah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic).

This hadith has also been reported from al-Zuhri, from ‘Ubayd Allah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, stating that the Prophet was asked, but without mentioning Maymunah. The report of Ibn ‘Abbas from Maymunah is more sound. Ma‘mar reported something similar from al-Zuhri, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, but this report is not preserved.

I heard Muhammad ibn Isma‘il say: In Ma‘mar’s report from al-Zuhri, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, it says that he was asked about it and replied: ‘If the ghee is solid, throw away the mouse and what is around it; if it is liquid, do not go near it.’ Muhammad said: ‘This is an error; Ma‘mar made a mistake in it. The sound report is that of al-Zuhri, from ‘Ubayd Allah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, from Maymunah.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler distinguishes the preferred chain through Maymunah from two variants that omit her or route the report through Abu Hurayrah; the latter version's solid/liquid ruling is explicitly called an error.

The English witness omits the opening transmitters and shortens the complete chain.

Should the English witness include the full chain?

This solid/liquid ruling is part of Ma‘mar's variant, which the compiler explicitly says is erroneous; the preferred report is through Ibn ‘Abbas from Maymunah.

Should the witness make the attribution of the disputed wording and the compiler's rejection clearer?
