Muhammad ibn Rafi reported to us from Yahya ibn Ishaq—al-Salahani—from Yazid ibn Hayyan, who said: I heard Abu Mijlaz, Lahiq ibn Humayd, narrate from Ibn Abbas, who said: The banner (rayah) of the Messenger of Allah was black, and his standard (liwa) was white.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib through this chain, from Ibn Abbas.

  • The Arabic uses two distinct terms for the flags: rayah and liwa; the English witness renders them as flag and standard.
