Mahmud ibn Ghaylan reported to us from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, who said: Shu bah informed us from Qatadah, who reported to us from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Prophet rode a horse belonging to Abu Talhah, called Mandub. He said: There was no cause for alarm; indeed, we found him to be a sea.

Abu Isa said: A report on this subject also comes from Ibn Amr ibn al-As. This hadith is hasan sahih.

  • The source English interprets the image ‘a sea’ as meaning swift. The Arabic itself uses the image without an explicit gloss.
