Muhammad ibn Bashshar reported to us from Yahya ibn Said, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara ibn Azib, who said: A man asked us, O Abu Umarah, did you flee from the Messenger of Allah? He replied: No, by Allah! The Messenger of Allah did not turn back. Rather, the hasty people turned back, and Hawazin met them with arrows. The Messenger of Allah was riding his mule, while Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib held its bridle. The Messenger of Allah was saying: I am the Prophet, no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.
Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject also come from Ali and Ibn Umar. This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic does not specify the mule’s color, though the English witness calls it white. The English witness also omits Abu Isa’s hasan sahih grading, which is present in Arabic.
The Arabic says mule but gives no color; the English witness adds white.
Does the adjective white reflect a variant edition or an addition in the English witness?
The Arabic includes a hasan sahih grading, absent from the supplied English witness.
Should the omitted grading be checked against the source edition?
