Abu Said al-Ashajj reported to us from Yunus ibn Bukayr, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Yahya ibn Abbad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, from his father, from his grandfather Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr, from al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, who said: On the day of Uhud, the Prophet wore two coats of mail. He tried to rise onto a rock but could not, so he seated Talhah beneath him. The Prophet then climbed onto him until he was settled on the rock. Al-Zubayr said: I heard the Prophet say, Talhah has earned it.
Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject also come from Safwan ibn Umayyah and al-Saib ibn Yazid. This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through the report of Muhammad ibn Ishaq.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic phrase ‘awjaba Talhah’ leaves its object unstated. The English witness supplies Paradise; the translation preserves the ellipsis rather than inserting that object.
أَوْجَبَ طَلْحَةُ
The Arabic leaves the object unstated; the English witness explicitly supplies Paradise.
Should Paradise be understood as the omitted object from the immediate context?
