Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Abu Kurayb reported to us from Ismail ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Jahdam—Musa ibn Salim—from Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah was a servant under command. He did not single us out from other people in anything except three matters: he commanded us to perform ablution thoroughly, not to eat charity, and not to breed a donkey with a mare.

Abu Isa said: A report on this subject also comes from Ali. This hadith is hasan sahih.

Sufyan al-Thawri transmitted this from Abu Jahdam, saying it was from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas. I heard Muhammad say: The report of al-Thawri is not preserved; al-Thawri erred in it. The correct version is that transmitted by Ismail ibn Ulayyah and Abd al-Warith ibn Said from Abu Jahdam, from Abdullah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Abbas, from Ibn Abbas.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness expands ‘servant under command’ as ‘who would order as he has been ordered to’; that additional clause is not explicit in the Arabic.

The Arabic says ‘a servant under command’ but does not explicitly say that he would order others as he had been commanded.

Should the expanded explanation in the English witness be treated as an interpretation rather than source wording?
