Abdullah ibn Abi Ziyad reported to us from al-Ahwas ibn al-Jawwab, Abu al-Jawwab, from Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara, that the Prophet sent two armies and appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib over one and Khalid ibn al-Walid over the other. He said: When fighting begins, then Ali.

Al-Bara said: Ali conquered a fortress and took a captive woman from it. Khalid ibn al-Walid sent a letter with me to the Prophet, making a tale-bearing report against Ali. I came to the Prophet, who read the letter, and his face changed color. Then he said: What do you think of a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love? I said: I seek refuge in Allah from angering Allah and His Messenger; I am only a messenger. Then he was silent.

Abu Isa said: A report on this subject also comes from Ibn Umar. This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through the report of al-Ahwas ibn al-Jawwab. The meaning of his words ‘he made a tale-bearing report against him’ is namimah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic’s phrase ‘When fighting begins, then Ali’ is elliptical; the supplied English witness interprets it as placing Ali in command, but the Arabic does not spell out that wording.

  • إِذَا كَانَ الْقِتَالُ فَعَلِيٌّ

The Arabic is elliptical and does not explicitly state ‘is in command,’ though this appears to be the intended sense in context.

Should the implied command be made explicit in the edited translation?
