Ibn Abi Umar reported to us from Sufyan, from Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah sent us on a military expedition. The people turned and fled, so we came to Madinah, hid there, and said: We are ruined. Then we went to the Messenger of Allah and said: Messenger of Allah, we are the fugitives. He said: No; you are those who rally back, and I am your support.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan. We know it only through the report of Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad. The meaning of ‘the people turned and fled’ is that they fled from the fighting. The meaning of ‘rather, you are those who rally back’ is that one returns to his imam to support him; it does not mean fleeing from the advancing army.
