Ibn Abi Umar reported to us from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Ibn Shihab, from Malik ibn Aws ibn al-Hadathan, who said: I heard Umar ibn al-Khattab say: The property of Banu Nadir was among what Allah granted to His Messenger without the Muslims having advanced against it with horses or camels. It belonged exclusively to the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah would set aside a year’s provision for his family, then use what remained for cavalry mounts and weapons as equipment in the cause of Allah.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Sufyan ibn Uyaynah transmitted this hadith from Ma mar, from Ibn Shihab.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic says the property was granted to the Messenger without the Muslims making a mounted advance against it; the English witness calls it spoils of war.
The Arabic describes property Allah granted to His Messenger and says the Muslims did not advance against it on horses or camels; the English witness labels it spoils of war.
Should the English witness’s ‘spoils of war’ be checked against the source edition and the Arabic term here?
