Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Yahya ibn Sa'id, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, and Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us; they said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Asim ibn Ubayd Allah, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Amir ibn Rabi'ah, from his father: A woman from Banu Fazara married for two sandals. The Messenger of Allah said to her: Are you content to give yourself and your property for two sandals? She said: Yes. He approved it. It is also reported in this chapter from Umar, Abu Hurairah, Sahl ibn Sa'd, Abu Sa'id, Anas, Aishah, Jabir, and Abu Hadard al-Aslami. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Amir ibn Rabi'ah is hasan sahih. Scholars differed about the dowry. Some said that the dowry is whatever the two parties mutually agree upon. This was the view of Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Malik ibn Anas said that the dowry may not be less than a quarter dinar. Some scholars of Kufa said that it may not be less than ten dirhams.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The wording connects the marriage to two sandals, without spelling out whether these were the full dowry or an illustrative consideration.

Should the phrase be rendered simply as the dowry of two sandals, or retain the source's broader wording?
