Ibn Abi Umar and Ishaq ibn Mansur narrated to us; they said: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Aishah, who said: The wife of Rifa'ah al-Qurazi came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I was with Rifa'ah, but he divorced me irrevocably. Then I married Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Zubayr, and he has nothing except something like the fringe of a garment. He said: Do you want to return to Rifa'ah? No, not until you taste his sweetness and he tastes yours. It is also reported in this chapter from Ibn Umar, Anas, al-Rumaysa or al-Ghumaysa, and Abu Hurairah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Aishah is hasan sahih. Most scholars among the Companions of the Prophet and others act on this: if a man divorces his wife three times and she marries another man, who divorces her before consummating the marriage, she is not lawful for the first husband unless the second husband has had intercourse with her.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic uses a euphemistic expression about tasting sweetness for marital intercourse; the phrase is kept as an idiom.
The Arabic is a euphemism for consummating the second marriage.
Should the euphemism be retained, or made explicit in English?
