Hannad narrated to us: Abdah narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Abi Arubah, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Salim ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Umar: Ghilan ibn Salamah al-Thaqafi became Muslim while he had ten wives from the pre-Islamic period, and they became Muslim with him. The Prophet ordered him to choose four of them. Abu Isa said: This is how Ma'mar narrated it, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father. I heard Muhammad ibn Isma'il say: This hadith is not preserved. The sound report is what Shu'ayb ibn Abi Hamzah and others narrated from al-Zuhri, who said: I was told by Muhammad ibn Suwayd al-Thaqafi that Ghilan ibn Salamah became Muslim while he had ten wives. Muhammad said: The report of al-Zuhri from Salim, from his father, is actually that a man from Thaqif divorced his wives. Umar said to him: You must take your wives back, or I will stone your grave as the grave of Abu Righal was stoned. Abu Isa said: Our scholars, including al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq, act on the report of Ghilan ibn Salamah.

The source contrasts this report with an alternative wording and attribution, then gives a separate report about a man from Thaqif and Umar.

Should the compiler's chain criticism be read as replacing the first attribution with the alternative account?
