Ibn Abi Umar narrated to us: Bishr ibn al-Sari narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abd Allah ibn Yazid, from Aishah: The Prophet used to divide his time among his wives justly and say: O Allah, this is my division in what I control, so do not blame me for what You control and I do not control. Abu Isa said: More than one person narrated the hadith of Aishah in this form, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Abd Allah ibn Yazid, from Aishah, that the Prophet used to divide his time. Hammad ibn Zayd and more than one other narrator reported it from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, as a mursal report that the Prophet used to divide his time. This latter version is more sound than the hadith of Hammad ibn Salamah. The meaning of his words, “Do not blame me for what You control and I do not control,” is love and affection, as some scholars have explained.
