Ahmad ibn Mani and Hannad narrated to us: Abu Muawiyah narrated to us, from al-Hajjaj, from Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah returned his daughter Zaynab to Abu al-As ibn al-Rabi with a new dowry and a new marriage contract. Abu Isa said: There is criticism of this hadith's chain. Scholars acted on this hadith as follows: if a woman embraces Islam before her husband, then her husband embraces Islam while she is still in her waiting period, he has the greater right to her for as long as she remains in that period. This is the view of Malik ibn Anas, al-Awza'i, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq.
