Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us: Ash'ath ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Zubayd al-Ayami narrated to us: Mujalid narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, and from al-Harith, from Ali, who both said: The Messenger of Allah cursed the muhill and the one for whom the tahlil is done. It is also reported in this chapter from Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Hurairah, Uqbah ibn Amir, and Ibn Abbas. Abu Isa said: The reports of Ali and Jabir are defective. Ash'ath ibn Abd al-Rahman narrated it from Mujalid, from Amir—meaning al-Sha'bi—from al-Harith, from Ali; and Amir from Jabir ibn Abdullah, from the Prophet. This hadith's chain is not sound, because some scholars, including Ahmad ibn Hanbal, considered Mujalid ibn Sa'id weak. Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated this hadith from Mujalid, from Amir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, from Ali. Ibn Numayr was mistaken in this, and the first report is more correct. Mughirah, Ibn Abi Khalid, and more than one other also narrated it from al-Sha'bi, from al-Harith, from Ali.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Muhill refers to an intermediary who marries a woman after an irrevocable divorce with the intent of making her lawful for her former husband; muhallal lahu is the former husband for whom this is done.

  • قَالاَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَعَنَ الْمُحِلَّ وَالْمُحَلَّلَ لَهُ ‏ .

The Arabic uses technical terms whose exact scope depends on the prohibited arranged marriage practice being discussed.

Should these technical terms be transliterated with the explanatory note, or translated into plain English in the hadith text?
