Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Asim ibn Kulayb, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: Every sermon that contains no testimony of faith is like a severed hand. Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan, [sahih], gharīb.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic places sahih in brackets, preserving its editorially qualified status.
The Arabic compares the sermon to a hand affected by jadham, a severe disease associated with loss or damage of the extremities.
Should the image be rendered literally as a severed hand or described more generally as an impaired hand?
