Ibn Abi Umar reported to us from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: Salman al-Farisi passed by Shurahbil ibn al-Simt while he was stationed at a frontier post, where the hardship had weighed on him and his companions. Salman asked, O Ibn al-Simt, shall I tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah? He said, Yes. Salman said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: A day of frontier guard in the cause of Allah is superior—or perhaps he said better—than a month of fasting and night prayer. Whoever dies while engaged in it is protected from the trial of the grave, and his deeds continue to grow until the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan.
