Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Ali ibn Hujr reported to us from al-Walid ibn Muslim, from Ismail ibn Rafi, from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever meets Allah without any trace of striving in His cause will meet Allah with a deficiency.

Abu Isa said: This report is gharib through the narration of al-Walid ibn Muslim from Ismail ibn Rafi. Some hadith scholars considered Ismail ibn Rafi weak. He said: I heard Muhammad say, He is trustworthy, with hadith that are acceptable or close to that level.

This report has also been transmitted through another chain from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet. As for the report of Salman, its chain is disconnected: Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir did not meet Salman al-Farisi. This report has also been transmitted similarly from Ayyub ibn Musa, from Makhul, from Shurahbil ibn al-Simt, from Salman, from the Prophet.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic uses thulmah, literally a breach or gap, for the deficiency with which a person meets Allah. Muqarib al-hadith is rendered cautiously as indicating hadith judged acceptable or close in level.

  • وَفِيهِ ثُلْمَةٌ

Thulmah literally denotes a breach or gap; deficiency is an interpretive rendering in this context.

Would a more literal ‘with a breach’ be preferable in the final edited text?
