حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَنْبَأَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ جَمِيلٍ الْفِلَسْطِينِيُّ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ مِنْ قَطْرَتَيْنِ وَأَثَرَيْنِ قَطْرَةٌ مِنْ دُمُوعٍ فِي خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ وَقَطْرَةُ دَمٍ تُهَرَاقُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ . وَأَمَّا الأَثَرَانِ فَأَثَرٌ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَأَثَرٌ فِي فَرِيضَةٍ مِنْ فَرَائِضِ اللَّهِ " . قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ .

Ziyad ibn Ayyub reported to us from Yazid ibn Harun, from al-Walid ibn Jamil al-Filastini, from al-Qasim Abu Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Umamah, from the Prophet, who said: Nothing is more beloved to Allah than two drops and two marks: a tear shed out of reverent fear of Allah, and a drop of blood spilled in the cause of Allah. As for the two marks, one is a mark sustained in the cause of Allah, and the other is a mark sustained while fulfilling one of the duties Allah has made obligatory.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib.

The Arabic contrasts two drops (qatratayn) with two marks or traces (atharayn); the latter includes a mark sustained in Allah’s cause and one sustained while carrying out an obligation.
